Sandustry Water & Steam Guide: Infinite Water and Rain Loops

Water never disappears in Sandustry — it cycles. Ice melts, water boils, steam rises, rain falls. Move it with the Tier 3 Pump → Pipe → Liquid Vent trio, make it renewable with Lumlings, the steam-rain loop or the Cryoblaster's infinite snow, and spend it twice: wet sand for the gold economy, and steam for the Tier 5 Steam Turbine. Everything below is verified against the official wiki.

First water rule: sand absorbs water to become Wet Sand — the input for every Shaker. Before building pumps, read the Shaker fixes page; most "broken" gold lines are actually a water shortage upstream, and the research order page tells you when Fluids (1250 gold) is worth buying.

THE CYCLE

Ice → water → steam → rain

Water in Sandustry is a state machine, not a resource you consume. Ice melts into water; water boils into steam; steam rises and falls back as rain. Heat a Thermal structure to push solids→liquids→gases, cool it to reverse. Every 'lost' lake is recoverable somewhere as rain.

TRANSPORT

Pump → Pipe → Liquid Vent

The Fluids research (Tier 3) unlocks the trio. Rules: fluid must sit at or above the Pump; it flows until the Vent's level is reached; one pipeline can carry multiple fluids but Vents emit whichever liquid is closest — so build one line per fluid. Lava is the exception: freeze it solid with the Cryoblaster, move the cinder, reignite it with a Flamethrower.

1) Lumlings: capture them with the Corraller — enough in one place produce a small but constant water supply. 2) The steam-rain loop: vaporize water with the Flamethrower and catch the rain. 3) The Cryoblaster's infinite snow: freeze, melt or steam it back into water. None of them run out.

Drying, condensing, power

Steam is a production input, not just weather: the Steam Dryer (Drying & Condensing, Tier 4) dries materials with steam — the start of the energy chain — and the Steam Turbine (Tier 5, 3000 gold) generates power automatically from the loop. The full energy chain: Amethelis → steam-dry → heat into Florin gas → condense into Florinol liquid → Florinol Battery.

How do I move water in Sandustry?
Research Fluids (Tier 3, 1250 gold) to unlock the Pump, Pipe and Liquid Vent. Place the Pump at or below the fluid level, run Pipes to a Liquid Vent above the fluid's destination level, and liquid flows continuously. Lava cannot travel through standard pumps and pipes — freeze it into cinder with the Cryoblaster first.
How does the water cycle work?
Ice melts into water; water boils into steam; steam rises and returns as rain. The Flamethrower vaporizes water into steam, and the Cryoblaster produces infinite snow that can freeze water or be steamed into rain — so water is never truly destroyed, only relocated.
How do I get infinite water in Sandustry?
Three community methods: capture Lumlings with the Corraller — enough of them create a small but constant water supply; exploit the steam-rain loop by vaporizing and re-condensing water; and use the Cryoblaster's infinite snow, melted or steamed back into water.
What is the Steam Turbine for?
It is the Tier 5 automated power generation structure (3000 gold). It sits at the end of the water-steam economy: the same steam that dries Amethelis and condenses Florin can drive turbines, converting your water loop into Energy for late-game machines.
Can pipes carry multiple fluids?
A single pipeline can transport multiple fluid types, but a Liquid Vent cannot filter which fluid comes out — it always prioritizes whichever liquid is closest. Keep separate fluid lines per liquid to avoid surprises.
